ANNAPURNA
CIRCUIT OR ROUND ANNAPURNA TREK

It is the best-known
trekking de3stination of Nepal. Annapurna Circuit trek lies inside the
world famous conservation area ‘The
Annapurna Conservation Area Project’ (ACAP).
It covers an area of 7629 sq km between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain
range. There are two famous Himalayan valleys Manang and Mustang. Both
are situated in the bank of mighty
Himalayan rivers Marsyandi and Kaligandaki respectively. The beautiful
Himalayan settlements along the river banks are like Hunde, Manang,
Muktinath, Kagbeni, Jomsom, Marpha, and Tukuche etc. They are the living
heritages of Gurung and Thakali culture. The Kaligandaki, between Kana
and Ghasa, is the deepest gorge in the world. The Lake Tilicho,
the highest in the world are other aspects of attraction. The hightest
pass Thorung-La (5416m) is another wonder of the nature that one feels
himself lost in the midst of Himalaya wilderness. The Ghorepani Poon
Hill, probably the best viewpoint in Nepal, is another famous viewpoint
center for a close view of Nilgiri, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himal.
Annapurna trek starts from
Besishahar. It takes about six hours drive from Pokhara to Besisahar
by a public bus. The total duration of trek ranges from two to three
weeks time. The trekking trail is good. After a few days trek, the trek
enters into the Manang valley. The Annapurna range on the west Pisan
and Chulu on the east surrounds Manang valley. On the west bank of Marsyandi
river, the trail goes along the foothill of Annapurna mountain range.
In Manang Phedi, there is a health post run by Himalaya Resque Association,
where lecture about altitude and AMS problem is given everyday. Basic
medicine also is available there. Thorung-La (5416m) is the hightest
pass of the trek. The magnificent panoramic view of Himalaya range including
the world famous mountains like dhaulagiri (8167m), Annapurna I (8091m),
Machhapuchhre (6997m), the most beautiful mountain in the world and
many more peaks can be seen from the pass. The Tilicho Lake (4919m),
the highest in the world is another beautiful glacier lake seen from
the pass. Crossing the Pass is challenging because the bad weather and
altitude problems are prominent in one hand and on the other, there
are no shelters available nor the camping is possible. Therefore, the
pass must be crossed in the same day. Annapurna Circuit Trekking is
an adventurous one that one must be sure that he or she is well prepared
and equipped for all possible eventualities. After a long descend from
the pass, Muktinath, a religious site for both Hindus and Buddhists
arrives. The trek then enters into the Mustang valley, a valley saturated
by the Kaligandaki river. There are beautiful Thakali settlements along
the trail. One can have an opportunity to have an insight experience
of Thakali culture, tradition and their lifestyle.
Jomsom is the district HeadQuater
of Mustang. There is regular air service from Pokhara. From Jomsom trek
follows the salt caravan, the ancient salt trade route to India, along
the bank of Kaligandaki river. At Tatopani, the trail is divided into
two parts and one goes to Beni and the other to Birethanti via Ghoreani/Poon
hill. Annapurna Circuit trek is the best-known trekking inside the Nepal
Himalayas.
